I just got my Amulet remote earlier this week and so far, I love it!

However, I'm having a problem getting my Windows 7 - x64 machine to understand the IR codes from the remote. I have a USB IR receiver that I got with a cheap Media Center remote. My old MC remote works fine via IR, but my Amulet remote buttons don't work with my IR receiver.

I verified that the Amulet is sending out IR commands by learning them into another remote that I own.

My old MC remote is still working fine, so I know that the IR receiver is OK.

There is no control panel or utility that came with my IR receiver to change the MC command set that it's looking for.

Do you have any advice for fixing this? Is there a driver or utility I can download to set-up my IR receiver to look for the default MC code-set? I have one other IR dongle that I can try, but it's designed to work with a LiquidTV Tivo remote.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Cheers!

Hi McVail,

Sorry to hear about that problem, it's unfortunate. There are a few things to look at to see if we can get you working with your existing receiver.

Does your receiver have a led that lights showing activity? Do you seen any activity on the receiver when you use the amulet remote?

Can you tell me the model of receiver? Perhaps the best place to see that is in Device Manager, or the Devices and Printers window in Win 7.

The next thing is to have a look in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HidIr\Remotes. This is where the standard MS receiver has some configuration info. There may or may not be an entry there. If you have entries in the registry there, it may be possible to configure it to receive standard RC6 media center codes.

We are using the RC6 IR code standard, which is what Microsoft use. But obviously your IR receiver is doing something else!

Anyway, check those two things and we'll see what we can do.

Thanks for your reply, Conor.

I just checked the registry entry, and it looks like my cheap MC Remote is a QuatroPulse MCE remote.

Here is a link to the website where I bought it:

www.eforcity.com/pothxxxirrc1.html?int=efsechtxtrigos-item

In the "Devices and Printers" control panel it seems to come up as a "P-01RN" device.

What changes would I need to make to the registry to make it understand the RC6 codeset?

Thanks again,

OK, so it looks like the Microsoft drivers are on your system.

I have attached a registry file with the entries to enable Media Center RC6 codes.

Save this file somewhere on your Media Center. Unzip to get the registry file. Then double click that to have the entries added to the registry. You then must reboot.

Technically it adds an RC6 decoder entry in the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\circlass\Decoders

and a definition of an MC remote in the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\HidIr\Remotes

(The file is just text, you can use notepad to look at it, if you like.)

These are needed, and probably missing on your system. But I can't guarantee that it's enough to make it work.

OK. I went ahead and ran this and verified that the changes are in my registry. After re-booting, my IR receiver is still not working with the Amulet remote.

What shall I try next? Thanks.

Hmmm, sorry to hear that. It's exhausted my immediate knowledge. I'll need to investigate a little further. But it may be a limit of the receiver hardware, assuming these entries were enough to make the software work.

I seem to have the same issue with a Ortek VCR-1100 remote. It shows up as QuatroPulse in regedit.

My Amulet remote does not provide any light response from the irreceiver. And my Amulet remote ir buttons work for the TV.

Any update on how to get the irreceiver to work with my Amulet remote?

Unfortunately, I don't think there's any way to get your IR receiver to work with Amulet. Amulet transmits Media Centre codes using the RC6 IR protocol supported by Microsoft's standard eHome receiver; any IR device showing up as eHome under Input Devices in Device Manager should work fine.

QuatroPulse is a newer standard developed by SMK which operates at more than 10 times the frequency of standard RC6; the hardware in the Amulet simply isn't capable of generating this protocol. More technical info is at www.smkusa.com/usa/technologies/qp/ if you're interested.

Your best option would be to source a cheap eHome USB IR receiver and use that as well as, or instead of, your existing IR receiver.
